When you hear of the word Surfing and skim boarding in Davao Oriental, the first place that comes to mind is Mati. Mati is the only city in Davao Oriental and it offers numbers of beautiful beach resorts. It has been a destination among locals or even foreigners to enjoy the beach waves. Dahican is the most sought-after in Mati with its fine long white sand shore. Mati is 2-3 hrs away from Davao City (via van).
Arriving there at Mati, you will ride on a habal-habal or tricycle to whichever beach resort you would like to enjoy. We headed straight to Dahican beach where you can choose resort you’d like to stay.
Our habal- habal driver brought us to Amihan sa Dahican because they don’t have entrance fee. Entering there you can really feel the strong winds.
The sand is brittle white and the beach water is so blue. The strong waves is really g00d for surfing and skim boarding. This is one of the best places to chill, relax and enjoy beach life. It is facing the Pacific Ocean that’s why the waves are quite big.
Dahican is also sanctuary of sea turtles and during our visit we’re so lucky to witness the freeing of new born sea turtles into the open sea.
We decided to stay for a night at Dahican Surf Resort which has a very nice beach ambiance. The sound of wind and waves, plus an ice cold beer plus good music (reggae music, Jack Johnson, Mishka, etc) this is pure relaxion. Oh… away from the city!
The most awaited part when you are in Dahican is the Sunrise. This is the best part of the day. The sunbeams casting in every direction. A big ball of fire changing from dark orange to dark yellow as it began to heat up the earth. It was breathtaking as you hear the sound of the waves too.
As the sun rises, the next best thing to do is go surfing or skim boarding. Dahican Surf Resort offers surf lessons and skim lessons.
We tried skimboarding since we’re not really swimmers. Maybe we’ll try surfing next time 😀
The foamy waters of the waves makes the shoreline more beautiful.
We met some members of the Amihan Boys during our visit there. Amihan Team was founded by “Kuya Jun” Plaza who trains the boys how to skim and surf. Not only that, he also trains them of good deeds and disciplines them like his own . Vices is a big “no!-no!” to their team so once found out, you’re out! 🙂
We also met the International Skimboarding champion Sonny Boy “Bayogyog” Aporbo, one of the Amihan Boys who is pride of Mati and Philippines. We had a photo op with him ( super ayus!)
Mati is indeed a place to be when you want to escape the busy city life and give yourself time to breathe fresh air and experience beach life.
How to get there?
From Davao City:
The easiest and fastest way I suggest to get there in Mati City is riding a van. Go to van terminal going to Mati City at Gaisano Mall van terminal
Fare- P200.oo (2-3hrs)
From Mati to Dahican
Ride a habal-habal to get there at Dahican
Fare – P50.00 each 2 person
You can also ride tricycle but you have to negotiate the price with the driver. If there are about 4 of you, fare is P30.00 each. This is based on our experience.
Where to Stay?
Amihan sa Dahican:
You can rent tent for an overnight stay which is P400.00 or you can rent table P100.00 for daytour.
Dahican Surf Resort
You can rent their rooms P2,000 good for 5 persons
You can bring your tent if you want to stay overnight and they have cottages for daytour only which is I guess for P200.00 (If I’m not mistaken). The resort is still under construction though
Better bring your own foods there because they don’t really have restaurants. You can bring your own drinks and foods no corkage. You can see small sari sari stores there that only sells basic commodities (cup noodles, shampoo etc)
